Turbodrills versus PDMs

Turbodrills : the alternative to Positive Displacement Motor (PDM)

Turbine (or turbodrill) is a hydraulic axial turbomachinery which consist of a multistage stators and rotors, the pumped drilling fluid is canalized by the stator vanes and diverted to the rotor vanes, converting the hydraulics power into mechanical power (Torque and RPM) with an associated mainly constant pressure drop signature.

PDM is a hydraulically driven downhole motor where the pressure of fluid trapped in each cavity acts on the lobe surfaces to create a force that turns the rotor. Pressure signature is correlated with the weight applied on bit.

Some of the most distinctive advantages of turbodrills

Principal of the conversion of hydraulic energy into mechanical energy

  • More efficient – less waste of energy due to internal friction
  • More speed & less torque

Fully Concentric drive train design

  • Free running system – less vibration and associated damages for third party tools/devices
  • Better holding of the toolface while operating in oriented mode
  • Better borehole quality (smooth and concentric wellbore).

Inner components (all metallic)

  • No decay of the performance during the run, as not impacted by components with fast wear
  • Full compatibility with harsh environment (HT-HP)
  • Full compatibility for powering multi-phase drilling fluid.

By exploiting inherent turbodrills attributes

The turbine is a tool designed as a fully concentric system with very reduced inner parts in surface contact.

The depth of cut (DOC) is relatively low with fixed cutter bit and light WOB is required, optimum rate of penetration (ROP) is achieve with the high bit rotation

It is a significant factor in promoting ROP in area where weight transfer to bit is difficult, the turbine has an incomparable ability to provide reliable high RPM with substantial drilling torque.

Reduced DOC, low WOB, high RPM, reduced Torque. These specificities are major factors for reducing damaging vibrations occurrence. In result extended downhole life for bit and electronic components meaning extended run length.

The practice of stalling is not a harming at all for the turbine inner component and not leading to sudden pressure increase. With a turbine the torque is not erratic after stalling event, the torque and speed back up slowly, allowing the fixed cutter bit to start drilling again.

Drilling in high temperature environment means a significant concern for BHA reliability and life. The turbine are entirely metallic in composition, the power is generated by metallics blades.

100% Metallic Turbodrill operates efficiently in extreme downhole temperatures. Proven at 500°F – 260°C, potentially higher limits…

The right downhole tool for the applications

Drilling vertical can represent a major challenge, keeping the wellbore verticality without the need for steering.

Turbodrills packed-hole drilling assembly using straight-hole turbodrill with packed stabilization combined with a use of «low» WOB demonstrate a natural dropping tendency – by a reduction of a «bellying» in the wellbore producing building of the angle.

In alternative of expensive «Vertical Drilling System» solutions which require to steer to maintain verticality – turbodrills offer to deliver a full power without even the need to run MWD into the string – time and money can be efficiently saved.

Example of application: Deep Geothermal well drilling

Coiled Tubing Drilling (CTD) has several advantages in comparison with conventional drilling methods, mobility of the Coiled Tubing Unit, reduced surface footprint during operations, continuous pumping while tripping in and out, reducing vulnerability to stucking event, controlling the pressure in under balanced situations.

The main constraints inherent with drilling with Coiled Tubing is that the tubing does not rotate, its flexibility makes the weight transmission to the bit limited along with a reduced capacity to handle downhole generated reactive torque.

Face to these challenges, turbodrill is surpassing alternative downhole motor for :

  • Converting Hydraulic energy into mechanical with the best of efficiency,
  • Promoting a drilling process with reduced WOB, high RPM, low detrimental reactive torque and level of vibration,
  • Steering with efficiency with a consistent toolface holding into a smooth “turbodrilled” hole.

Performance (ROP) delivered by our turbodrills in sliding/oriented mode or rotary mode is nearly the same. For a given bent housing angle, turbodrills have shown comparatively to provide greater directional responsiveness and thus can deliver a higher DLS.

This is mainly due to the turbine’s outputs (high energy / high RPM) and the relatively low WOB applied to the with a shallow depth of cut. Less fluctuating and reactive torque result in much easier control of the toolface (which remains precise and steady).

Selecting turbodrills for challenging work-over applications – the right choice for operating in harshest environment.

An all metallic construction to perform in high temperature environment,

Performing in dual-phase without fearing explosive decompression like for elastomeric power section,

Pumping aggressive work-over fluid such acid without compromising the performance of the turbodrill,

A milling process for reducing scales to powder for an enhanced cutting transportation and avoiding surface line plugging,
With ability to perform successive thru-tubing runs in a row.

Example of application : Hard scale removal intervention (Under Liquid/N2).
